You're focused on the fact that you're slightly uncomfortable in not being able to summarily dismiss this guy as an incorrigible criminal. Seems reasonable to me. Everyone has some redeeming features. Hitler was a decent artist. Though it seems to me that you haven't really developed the idea of why this guy is particularly interesting to you. From your description, it still seems a leap from hearing his plight to actually caring enough to stay in touch and try to help him. The cynic in me wants to know how hard he and his lawyers tried to use his attempts at recovery between conviction and sentencing in an attempt to mitigate the severity of his sentence.
